Sharon Torgerson

As Vice President People, Sharon provides strategic leadership to support the employees of Island Health in order to achieve excellence in health and care.  Sharon’s role encompasses responsibility for Human Resources Business Partners, Organizational Development, Enterprise Change Management, Employee and Labour Relations, Talent Acquisition and Employee Journey, Health, Wellness, Safety & Ability Management as well as Scheduling Services. Under Sharon’s leadership, the People Portfolio strives to provide leaders and employees with quality, effective services and supports that enables them to achieve superior clinical quality and service excellence for the patients, clients, residents and their families.

Sharon has over 30 years of progressive leadership experience across both public and private sector.  Sharon brings with her a wealth of experience in BC Health Care from serving as an executive for BC Clinical and Support Services (BCCSS) where she was responsible for a number of administration functions including Human Resources, Privacy and Access to Information and Stakeholder Engagement. Prior to her experience with BCCSS she worked as a senior leader in Human Resources for Suncor Energy in both Calgary and Fort McMurray

Sharon started her career as a Registered Nurse, graduating from Foothills School of Nursing in Calgary, Alberta. As a lifelong learner, she pursued her post-basic certificate in Mental Health Nursing from Mount Royal College before obtaining her BScN from the University of Victoria. Sharon’s passion for people drew her to Human Resources and was her motivation to complete a Masters in Continuing Education with a specialty in Workplace Learning from the University of Calgary.
