Social media

Island Health participates in social media networks (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.) to reach and engage with our community. Read on to learn more about some examples of how we interact with the information shared with us on social media, a community moderation policy, and monitoring of our channels.

Facebook 

Island Health uses Facebook to share information about our health services, programs, locations, public health notices, and news about our organization with those who are interested in, and could benefit from this information. You can follow, and/or like us on Facebook @VanIslandHealth.

Moderation policy

We welcome your participation in our discussion and look forward to an active exchange of ideas.

We want to publish your comments, and ask that conversations follow the conventions of polite discourse.

Therefore, we won’t post comments that:

• contain abusive, obscene, indecent or offensive language

• include defamatory, abusive, harassing or hateful remarks or make unproven or unsupported accusations against individuals or organizations

• constitute spam, promote services or products

• invade anyone’s privacy or impersonates anyone

• are far off-topic

• are posted without the necessary rights, licences and consents

• encourage conduct that may or would constitute a criminal offence or give rise to civil liability, or that otherwise violates any local, provincial, national or international law or regulation anywhere in the world

• contain long embedded URLs

• contain excessive links or contain code 

• are contrary to the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

We we reserve the right to edit or remove objectionable content, so please ensure that your comment contains none of the above.

Facebook Analytics

Island Health may use Facebook analytics to collect data on how often, and when, links are clicked on and posts are viewed. Facebook analytics also collects information on the geographical locations of its users. Learn more about this at Facebook's Data Policy.

To protect your own privacy and the privacy of others, please do not include any personal information including medical information, phone numbers and email addresses in the body of your Facebook comment. Please do not share personal information about others, including in pictures, without their consent.

Monitoring

We monitor the Island Health Facebook feed during regular hours of operation, usually between Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Complaints or concerns 

If you have a concern or complaint about care that you have received, please speak with a manager responsible for the service or program involved. If that is not possible, you can contact the Patient Care Quality Office

Retweets, Quotes, and Likes

If we retweet (RT), quote, or like a tweet from another Twitter user, it does not imply endorsement on the part of Island Health of the product, service, or individual who posted that tweet. We may like, retweet or quote news, links and resources, or points of view we believe are relevant to the work we do. A like, RT or quote is not equal to an endorsement of a position or argument.

If we decide to follow a Twitter user, this does not equal endorsement of a product, service, or individual.

Twitter Analytics

How we protect and use information we collect

Island Health's collection, use, disclosure, and retention of information comply with the provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Collected information is used only by authorized Island Health staff to fulfill the purpose for which it was originally collected.

We will not sell or trade any personally identifiable information that may be collected from our website and will not disclose such information to third parties except as authorized by law.
