Innovation isn’t just about making change. It’s more than just rearranging existing parts or enacting process improvement. It involves seeing what's possible through a different lens.
In our healthcare setting, innovation is the introduction of new ideas and solutions contributed by our people that add value for our patients.
Innovation extends across departments and relies on the input of staff, physicians, partners, and most-importantly, patients.
The Innovation Lab exists to explore and extend the boundaries of what is possible at Island Health by enabling, encouraging, celebrating, and sustaining innovation through intrapreneurship - the ability to think and act like an entrepreneur from within an organization.
With relationships at the heart of our work, the Innovation Lab brings different health groups together to cross-pollinate experiences and ideas, break down barriers, and create the conditions for outcomes that are not otherwise possible.
The Lab exists to create actionable solutions to real world problems.
We believe innovation is in everyone’s job description. We create and curate opportunities for our people to surface, shine, and share innovations. We also look outside our organization to grow partnerships with our community.
Our structure enacts the belief that we are better together and how we connect matters.
Using human-centered design thinking, we strive toward a sustainable healthcare system that is innovative by design. A concrete example of bringing patients, staff, and partners together is Code Hack, Island Health’s first annual hackathon.
