What is primary care?

Primary health care is the first place people will go to for:

  • health care or wellness advice and programs
  • non-emergent treatment of a health issue or injury
  • help to diagnose and manage a condition

Primary health care includes all the services in your community that support the day-to-day health needs of you and your family through every stage of life. Some examples of those services include:

  • a visit to your primary care provider (family doctor or nurse practitioner)
  • a consultation with a specialist (for example, an ophthalmologist or pediatrician)
  • an appointment with a dietitian or social worker

Primary health care includes a focus on wellness, and connecting you with social supports that influence your health status, such as housing or family and community services. It draws on the expertise of many different providers working together. It recognizes that your health, wellness and quality of life are influenced by your economic, cultural and physical situations, and your spiritual beliefs.

Our medical team

Team-based care means our patients get the benefit of treatment by multiple roles, such as:

  • Medical Office Assistants (MOAs) keep the clinic running smoothly and communicate with you and our health care professionals. They will gladly make an appointment with a health care provider for you, assist you with referrals, and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to contact them by phone at 250-902-6008.
  • Doctors take a comprehensive approach to providing high quality primary care. They are a group of dedicated and compassionate professionals who create a safe and respectful environment to address all your health care needs.
  • Registered Nurses (RN) are specially trained to assess and treat minor conditions. They are also trained to provide preventative health care by doing immunizations, routine infant growth and development visits, and birth control counselling.  Our nurse works collaboratively with your physician to ensure complete care.
  • Allied Care professionals provide supportive counselling and social work services to our patients. Our in-house social worker is available to see you on an individual basis to provide short-term supportive counselling, disability supports, and provide information and referral to external community resources.
  • Indigenous Nurse Practitioners are nurses with advanced knowledge and clinical skills who deliver a range of health care services to First Nations individuals, families and communities.  Our nurse practitioner can provide a wide range of health services and support including:   Elder’s health, women’s health, mental health and wellness, prenatal care, chronic diseases.
  • Our Diabetes Educator can help with nutrition information for blood sugar and heart health, and can help with self-management of insulin doses to get good blood sugar control as examples.
  • Dietitians work together with patients, their families and members of the care team to provide services to support management of chronic conditions.
