When this service may help

This service may help if your child:

  •  Is not meeting expected developmental milestones
  • Has difficulty moving, walking, balancing or using their hands
  • Has difficulty speaking, communicating, eating or swallowing
  • Needs help with everyday activities, such as dressing, playing or taking part in school
  • Has a condition that affects their movement, development, learning or participation
  • Needs equipment, therapy or other support at home, at school or in the community
  • Would benefit from an assessment by a specialized care team
  • Is preparing to move between programs, start school or adjust to changing needs

 

Am I eligible?

Your child may be eligible if they:

  • Are under 19 years old
  • Need assessment or therapy for development, movement, communication or daily activities
  • Live in an area served by the program
  • Have a referral

The services available depend on your child’s age, needs and location. Contact the intake team to confirm eligibility.


Clinics

CYFH-RS Clinics provide assessments and intervention for children and youth. These include Cleft Lip and Palate, Neuromuscular, Spinal, Visual Impairment and Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing clinics.

What to Expect
  • The team will talk with you about your child’s strengths, needs and goals. An assessment will help determine which services may support your child.
  • Depending on your child’s age and needs:
    • Children from birth to age five may work with an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech-language pathologist or another member of the Early Intervention Program.
    • School-aged children and youth may work with an occupational therapist or physiotherapist through the School Age Therapy Program.
  • Your child may be referred to a specialized clinic for further assessment and recommendations.
  • Therapy may take place at home, at school, in child care, in the community or at an Island Health location.
  • The team may work with your family, your child’s school, child care providers and other community partners
  • Your child’s support plan will build on their strengths and focus on helping them take part in everyday life.
