Pain management groups

When this service may help

Pain management groups may help if you:

  • Want to improve your quality of life
  • Want more ways to manage pain alongside medication
  • Want to reduce stress and tension
  • Want to do more daily activities
  • Are open to learning how thoughts, feelings and actions can affect pain
  • Want to learn practical skills based on current pain science

How to get started

  1. Ask your primary care provider for a referral. If it is accepted, your provider will be notified and you will be added to the waitlist.
  2. You need an accepted referral to Pain support before joining a group. The current wait is about 12 months. Group options and registration are different in Victoria and Nanaimo.

What to expect

  • Programs are offered in a group setting.
  • You will learn practical skills to help you:
    • Manage stress and body tension
    • Build healthy daily routines
    • Take part in everyday activities
    • Feel more confident managing ongoing pain

Programs for current pain support patients:

Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH)

How it works:

  • Current pain support patients can register for Understanding Pain and Your Path Forward, a 90-minute introductory session.

  • To register, email RJHPainSelfManagement@islandhealth.ca with:

    • your full name

    • the course name 

    • your provincial health number

  • The team will send you instructions for joining the session.

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital

How it works:

  • Patients are registered for an orientation.
  • You will receive a letter with the date, time and attendance instructions.
