Care in your language

Need help in another language? Ask for an interpreter for any Island Health appointment or service. Interpreters are available in more than 240 languages, including American Sign Language.

Francais | العربية | 简体中文 | 繁體中文 | Español | 한국어

How to get started

  1. Ask for an interpreter right away. Say: “I need an interpreter.” Ask when you book your appointment, or tell a staff member when you arrive.
  2. A staff member will connect you with a medically trained interpreter by video, audio or phone. Your care team will tell you how the interpreter will join the appointment.

American Sign Language interpreters

If you are deaf, deaf-blind or hard of hearing, you can ask for an American Sign Language interpreter.

You can also contact Virtual Care Technology Services for help: virtualcare@islandhealth.ca or 250-519-1944

What to expect

  • The interpreter helps you and your care provider understand each other.
  • The interpreter may join by video, audio or phone.
  • Your care provider will speak directly with you and give the interpreter time to repeat the information to you.
  • The interpreter will only interpret what is said during the appointment.

Family and friends

Family members or friends can support you at your appointment.

It is also important to have a professional interpreter for language support.

Professional interpreters are trained in medical terminology and help make sure information is clear and accurate.
