How to get started
- Ask for an interpreter right away. Say: “I need an interpreter.” Ask when you book your appointment, or tell a staff member when you arrive.
- A staff member will connect you with a medically trained interpreter by video, audio or phone. Your care team will tell you how the interpreter will join the appointment.
American Sign Language interpreters
If you are deaf, deaf-blind or hard of hearing, you can ask for an American Sign Language interpreter.
You can also contact Virtual Care Technology Services for help: virtualcare@islandhealth.ca or 250-519-1944
What to expect
- The interpreter helps you and your care provider understand each other.
- The interpreter may join by video, audio or phone.
- Your care provider will speak directly with you and give the interpreter time to repeat the information to you.
- The interpreter will only interpret what is said during the appointment.
Family and friends
Family members or friends can support you at your appointment.
It is also important to have a professional interpreter for language support.
Professional interpreters are trained in medical terminology and help make sure information is clear and accurate.
Tell any Island Health staff member: “I need an interpreter.”
If you have trouble accessing interpreter services, contact the Patient Care Quality Office.
