Welcome Bienvenue G̱ilakas'la čɛčɛhaθɛč ƛayaḥuʔał Ul’ Skweyul Taanishi nuw̓ílum
We respectfully acknowledge that we provide care on the unceded traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nations, the traditional keepers of this land. This space – both physical and digital – has been created in the spirit of respect, healing, and cultural safety.
Sandy Good, Health Administrator, Snuneymuxw First Nation, welcomes you to the clinic and blesses the new centre space with a prayer to the Creator.
"I'm so thrilled to be here. My work in health has come full circle to see the new centre here."
Watch the welcome:
As you enter the clinic, you are met by an art piece created and carved by Noel Brown, a Coast Salish Artist and Master Carver from the Snuneymuxw First Nation where he lives with his wife and three sons.
Noel talks about his art in this space:
Connie Paul, Primary Care Medical Manager at Snuneymuxw First Nation Health Centre, shares the meaning of the Thunderbird and the importance of how the space was developed.
"It's important to create an environment where someone's dignity is a consideration in the design. And so I was really happy, fill up my heart, when some of those recommendations were built in to the thunderbird wing. The creation of a space that can take care of those are most fallen, our vulnerable brothers and sisters. And all I can say is I felt that our voices and our needs were answered in the development of this building."
Listen to the story of the Thunderbird:
Thunderbird Wing
The Thunderbird Wing is a separate wing of the clinic created to provide culturally safe and discrete patient care.
This clinic was designed and built in collaboration with local Indigenous partners and working groups, whose guidance and insights have been invaluable in creating a space that is welcoming and culturally safe for Indigenous patients and their families.
We extend our sincere gratitude to these partners for their contributions.
Cedar Room
The Cpey Snugin – Cedar Room is a safe, quiet space for healing, ceremony and connection. It’s soundproof for drumming and specially vented for smudging. The furniture is placed in a circle to welcome support from your loved ones and your care team as you share, reflect and have the opportunity to heal.
About this space
This digital space was created in collaboration with Connie Paul and Gloria Harding who partnered with Island Health to bring forth the intention of the CNUPCC space to reflect a care environment grounded in cultural safety, trust and community.
It is part of our ongoing work to support healing experiences for everyone, in every space – whether in a waiting room, a hospital, or online.
