Hearing tests and supports

Get your child's hearing checked and find support if they have hearing loss, through Public Health Units. 

When this service may help

• Your child missed a newborn or kindergarten hearing screening.
• Your child does not respond consistently to sounds.
• Your child asks people to repeat themselves or has trouble hearing in noisy places.
• You have concerns about your child's speech, language or hearing.

Who can use this service

• Services are available for children and youth from birth to age 19.

How to get started

1. Parents and caregivers can contact an Island Health hearing clinic to request support.

2. A health-care provider or community professional can also make a referral on behalf of the family.

What to expect 

• A hearing professional will ask about your child’s hearing, speech and development. They may screen or test your child’s hearing using activities suited to their age and abilities.

• After the test, they will:
  • Explain the results
  • Answer your questions
  • Let you know if more testing is needed
  • Discuss treatment or hearing equipment, if needed
  • Connect your family with other services and supports

How to prepare

• Bring your child's BC Services Card and any hearing equipment they use. 
• Write down your questions and concerns.
