Avian influenza

Avian influenza, or bird flu, is a virus that mainly affects birds but can also infect other animals and, rarely, people.

Protect yourself

The risk to most people in B.C. is low. To protect yourself:

  • Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and other animals that may have avian influenza.
  • Do not touch sick or dead animals with your bare hands.
  • If you work with or care for birds or other animals, follow recommended safety precautions.
  • If you have been in contact with an infected animal and develop symptoms, contact a health-care provider.
