Avian influenza (Bird flu)

The risk of getting avian influenza from animals is low for most people. People who have close contact with infected birds or other animals may be at greater risk.

Avian influenza mainly affects birds but can also infect animals such as cats, dairy cows and marine mammals. In rare cases, it can infect people.

How to protect yourself

  • Avoid touching sick or dead birds and animals, their droppings or areas where they have been. Keep children and pets away.
  • Do not bring sick wild animals into your home.
  • If you handle potentially infected animals, follow official guidance on protective equipment.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after handling raw poultry.
  • Get your seasonal flu vaccine. It does not protect against bird flu but can reduce the risk of infection with seasonal and avian influenza at the same time.
  • Cook poultry and eggs thoroughly. Avoid raw milk and unpasteurized dairy products.

See the BCCDC's guide to protecting yourself.
