Geriatric Specialty Services

Seniors with frailty often have cognitive decline, unstable health, and/or complex needs, which make their care more challenging.

Clients with complicated needs may benefit from a Geriatric Specialty Services (GSS) consultation if other services haven’t fully met their needs and they are at higher risk of serious health issues.

Island Health’s GSS teams include geriatricians, geriatric psychiatrists, general practitioners, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, therapists, and other health professionals who work together to support seniors and their families. They provide assessments and care for issues like memory loss, falls, pain, mental health concerns, and other age-related conditions.

The goal is to help seniors stay safe, healthy, and as independent as possible. As a consultative service, the focus is on short-term support to stabilize the client and work with other teams and resources to improve safety, health, and quality of life.

Depending on your community and need, GSS services may be offered virtually, in home, or in a clinic.

If you know a senior who needs extra support, talk to their doctor about a referral to Geriatric Specialty Services today.
