Geriatric psychiatrists (specialists in mental health for older adults) work with patients and geriatric specialty services (GSS) clinicians (nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and social workers) to support adults over 75 who have psychiatric conditions, complex neurological symptoms, challenging behaviors, and/or substance use issues. They also care for people with progressive brain disorders such as early-onset Alzheimer’s or frontotemporal dementia.
Geriatric psychiatry programs are based in Campbell River, Comox Valley, Port Alberni, Cowichan, Nanaimo and Victoria.
When this service can help
A geriatric psychiatry program may help you or a loved one over 75 if you’re experiencing complex mental health or neurological symptoms, challenging behaviors, or substance use issues that are difficult to manage with regular care. It also supports individuals with progressive brain disorders such as early-onset Alzheimer’s or frontotemporal dementia.
Am I eligible?
You may be eligible if you are 75 years of age with:
- Psychiatric symptoms starting later in life, such as mood disorders, psychosis, or anxiety
- Severe, long-term mental illness made more complex by:
- Cognitive decline suggesting a possible neurocognitive disorder
- Frailty or serious medical conditions
- Dementia-related behavioral or psychological symptoms
- Cognitive decline linked to substance use
- Loss of function or self-care
Anyone with progressive brain disorders like early-onset Alzheimer’s or frontotemporal dementia.
How to access this service
A doctor or nurse practitioner referral is required to access this service.
What to expect
Once your referral is received, you will be contacted by a Community Access clinician to discuss your referral.
