- Nerve damage caused by diabetes

Foot orthotics or footwear changes may help improve how your feet and legs work and reduce pain caused by:
- Diabetes
- Sports injuries
- Arthritis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Leg or foot pain
- Toe changes
- Foot ulcers
How to get started
- You need a prescription or referral from a doctor or nurse practitioner.
- Your health-care provider can send it directly to us. They may also give it to you so you can contact us to make an appointment.
- We will contact you after we receive your referral.
General Information on Orthotics and bracing
A written referral or prescription from your physician is required for a device and/or assessment at the Queen Alexandra Orthotics, Prosthetics and Seating.
How do I make an appointment?
You can send a referral or prescription to us by:
- Faxing it to 250-519-6915
- Scanning and emailing to qaopsadmin@islandhealth.ca
- Personally delivering it to our reception staff
To schedule your appointment, please call 250-519-6732.
At the end of your first appointment, you can make future appointments at our reception before you leave.
Bring the following to your appointment:
- Your BC Services Card
- Your personal health number
- Your prescription or referral, if your doctor gave it to you
- Any insurance or funding information
- Supportive shoes if your appointment is for foot care, an orthotic or a brace
If you are coming for foot orthotics, arrive a few minutes early to complete a short form.
You will meet with a health professional who will assess your needs and discuss your goals.
Your first appointment may include:
- An assessment of how you move
- Measurements of your foot, leg or body
- A mould for a custom device
- A fitting or adjustment
- Information about costs and funding
Depending on your needs, we may take a mould or fit your device at your first visit. You may need another appointment to complete the process.
