Give your baby a safe place to sleep

When this service can help

A free baby bed may help if:

  • you are preparing for your baby’s arrival or 
  • you have a new baby and need a safe place for them to sleep.

Am I eligible?

You may be eligible if you live in the Island Health region and are:

  • in your third trimester of pregnancy, or
  • caring for a baby up to two months old.
     

The bed can be used until your baby is about four or five months old, or begins to roll.

How to get started

  1. Fill out the online form to request a baby bed. Register for a baby bed
  2. You can also contact your local Public Health Unit for health.  Find your public Health Unit  

What to expect

Public Health will help arrange your baby bed and connect you with support for you and your baby. This may include:

  • prenatal and postnatal care
  • breastfeeding support
  • public health nursing
  • parenting and infant health support
  • connections to other local services

Your baby bed and how to use it

  • Your baby bed is made of sturdy cardboard and comes with a firm mattress. 
  • Follow the instructions provided with your baby bed.
  • Stop using the bed when your baby starts to roll, usually around four to five months old.
  • Never carry or transport your baby in the bed.

Donate to support baby beds

  • Donations help provide safe sleep spaces and practical support for families across the Island Health region. 
  • Preferred items include diapers, wipes, blankets, knitted hats, baby books and other new baby supplies. 
  • To make a donation or learn what is currently needed, contact your local public health unit.
