IBD Rapid Access Clinic

The goal of the IBD rapid access clinic is to provide specialty care to IBD patients experiencing worsening gastrointestinal symptoms or flares. An IBD nurse will complete individualized assessments which may include further testing to enhance care recommendations and prevent worsening gastrointestinal symptoms or flares.

When assessment are made early, specialists such as the IBD nurse and physician are able to create a timely and effective individualized treatment plan. This will help reduce the risk of further complications, reduce the need for steroid use and reduce unscheduled emergency department visits.

How to get a Referral

Patients are to be referred to the clinic through their Gastroenterologist’s office. Once the referral is received the patient will be contacted by the IBD nurse specialist.

The endoscopy clinic does not accept referrals from physician’s offices.

Preparing for Your Visit

The goal of the first meeting is to help your IBD nurse understand your symptoms, disease history, and everything else that's needed to develop the best treatment plan for you.

To ensure your appointment goes smoothly please do the following;

  1. Get any required bloodwork completed before your visit.
  2. Make a list of your medications. It is important for the IBD clinic specialists to know about any medications you are taking or have taken recently or trialed in the past.
  3. Provide your immunization records. Some patients who attend our clinic may require immunomodulator medications at some point during their disease course. These medications can suppress the immune system and can potentially make the patient more susceptible to infections. It is very important to review your vaccination history with your IBD specialist to make sure you are protected. If you cannot recall whether you have received a particular vaccine, contact your local public health clinic and request the information.

If you need to cancel, please contact lisa.hogarth@islandhealth.ca or call 250-370-8790 prior to your visit.

After Your Visit

Follow up on any bloodwork required and prescription/medication changes.
