Referrals to Child Youth & Family Mental Health

Child Youth and Family Mental Health provides tertiary services to children, youth and their families throughout Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. This specialized intervention is for children and youth whose chronic and often acute mental health needs have exceeded the capacity of community resources, including the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Child & Youth Mental Health Services.

We encourage open communication with families and involved professionals throughout the process of assessment and treatment. Your involvement is essential to support the child/youth’s continuing needs.

How to access services

Please access one of the following links for further information and to access the appropriate referral forms.

The following services accept referrals from anyone in the community, including family members and the child or youth themselves:

The following services require a referral from a physician, general practitioner, pediatrician, psychiatrist or mental health clinician.

There is eligibility criteria for a tertiary level service. This means that clients have already received assessment and intervention services in the community.

Referrals are regularly reviewed by the Intake Review Committees. The Committees generally consist of psychiatry, administrative staff, and the intake clinicians. A decision is made to either accept the child/youth for the appropriate waitlist, or to decline the referral and make alternative recommendations for other resources or services.
