Family and friend caregivers can get counselling and practical guidance, or temporary breaks from care (respite) while their loved ones are safe and looked after.

What to expect

You can access:
- One-on-one counselling
- Skills classes
These supports can help you cope with stress, set boundaries, and care for yourself while caring for someone else. These supports are available from home by phone or online and are provided through the Community virtual care (CVC) Caregiver Support Program.
- Help at home

We offer a range of professional and personalized support tailored to receiving care in your home. From nursing to assistance with daily care needs.
This service is provided by Home Support Services.
- Help with safe bathing

Your loved one can bathe in a special tub with help from trained staff at a nearby site. This is helpful if bathing at home has become difficult, tiring, or unsafe for you or the person you support.
This service is provided through the Community Bathing Program.
- Safe and supported activities for your loved one outside of the home

Your loved one spends part of the day in a friendly program with:
- Social activities and conversation
- Gentle exercise or movement
- A meal and snacks
These services are provided by Adult Day Programs.
- Short overnight breaks in a care home

Your loved one stays for a short time (for example, a few days or weeks) in a licensed care home. Staff provide 24-hour care, so you can:
- Take a break from caregiving
- Travel
- Recover from illness or stress
while knowing your loved one is supported.
This support is provided through Facility Respite Care.
Am I eligble?
You may be eligible if you and the person you care for would benefit from support, and the person receiving care:
- Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or has a valid temporary resident permit
- Has lived in British Columbia for at least three months
- Is 19 years of age or older
- Cannot manage on their own because of ongoing health problems, is recovering after a hospital stay, needs care to avoid hospital or long-term care admission, or is living with a life-limiting illness

Cost and fees (2025)
Adult Day Programs: Up to $10 per day (includes snacks, meals, activities and program supplies). May include transportation. Fees may be waived for financial hardship.
Community Bathing: Cost varies. Call the Community Access Line to ask about rates.
Facility Respite Care: $48.20/day in 2025 (B.C. rate; changes yearly)
Home Support Services: Cost depends on your income. Some people qualify for no daily charge.
