Diagnostic & Screening Mammography

Mammography is a specific medical imaging method that uses low-energy x-rays to visualize the breast tissue in order to detect early signs of breast diseases, particularly breast cancer.

Screening mammograms are performed as a screening tool for women who do not have any breast symptoms, while diagnostic mammograms are used when breast symptoms are present. Although most mammograms are performed on women, men also may undergo this imaging service. Compression is used by placing the breast between two plates - one above the breast and one below.  Although this may cause some minor discomfort, it is a crucial step in obtaining a high quality image. Exam time is approximately 30 minutes.

Preparing for Your Visit

For appointments booked two weeks in advance, the patient should receive a letter in the mail indicating: date, time, location of the appointment, preparation instructions, and a map.

For appointments booked within two weeks, the patient will be contacted directly by the ordering physician's office, or a medical imaging booking clerk, with the necessary information. 

The patient is responsible for providing his/her physician with the most current address, home and cell phone numbers in order to receive prompt service.
