Visiting a loved one in hospital can make a big difference to their comfort and recovery. Island Health welcomes visitors and support people while helping keep patients, staff, and the public safe.
Before you visit
Please take a moment to check a few things before coming to the hospital.
- Arrive early if you have a scheduled visit or appointment and allow extra time to enter the facility.
- Use the Main Entrance where possible. Signs at each site will guide you.
- Stay home if you feel unwell. Visitors with respiratory symptoms should not visit the hospital.
- Masks are not required in Island Health facilities (as of March 28, 2025). If you prefer, you are welcome to wear one.
When you arrive
- Enter through the Main Entrance whenever possible
- Sanitize your hands when entering the facility
- Follow posted signs or directions from staff
- Check in with the unit or front desk if required
If you are unsure where to go, staff or volunteers at the entrance can help direct you.
During your visit
To help protect patients and staff:
- Speak with the primary nurse or unit clerk before entering the patient’s room to let them know you have arrived and ask if there are any instructions.
- Follow the infection prevention guidance provided by health care staff.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Respect personal space in patient rooms and shared areas.
- Clean your hands before leaving the room.
- Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, making sure to clean all surfaces of your hands and wrists. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Special visiting situations
Some areas may allow additional visitors depending on patient needs and cultural practices.
Bringing items for a patient
If you plan to bring items for your loved one, please check with the unit first. Only bring essential items, such as:
- hearing aids
- glasses
- cell phone and charger
- items required for care
Other items such as flowers, gifts, blankets, food, or personal belongings may only be allowed if the unit leader approves them as necessary for patient care.
Dropping someone off for an appointment
If you are dropping off or picking up someone who has a scheduled appointment, please check in with or front desk when you arrive. They can help direct you to the appropriate location.
If you have any questions about visiting a specific patient or unit, please contact the hospital directly. Staff provide the most current information.
