New process for accessing urgent after-hours medical care on Hornby Island improves reliability

Island Health and our local partners are informing residents and visitors to Hornby Island of a change in the way people access urgent after-hours medical care that will improve reliability and ensure a timely and appropriate response.

What you need to know:

  • Starting May 15, 2026, if you need urgent or emergency medical care outside of clinic hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), call 911 immediately.
  • 911 dispatch will assess your situation and coordinate the appropriate response.
  • The previous after-hours number (1-888-581-4360) will no longer be active. Any calls to this number will receive an automated message directing them to call 911.
  • Hornby Island Medical Clinic staff will continue to be available to respond after-hours, when it is deemed clinically appropriate and staffing levels allow.

Island Health has worked closely with the local BC Emergency Health Services and Hornby Island Fire Rescue teams regarding this change. We are all committed to making sure people get the care they need, when they need it. This change will ensure people get the right response and care without delay.
