Saanich Peninsula Hospital COVID-19 outbreak update

Island Health has identified two additional cases of COVID-19 linked to the outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital (SPH). These two new cases were identified following a second round of patient testing.

To date, nine patients and five staff members have tested positive for COVID-19. Sadly, Island Health has confirmed a COVID-related death related to the outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Out of respect for the privacy of this individual and their family, we will not be sharing any further details.

The testing continues to confirm that the outbreak at SPH is limited to acute care areas. The outbreak was declared on December 1. Patients in the acute care areas continue to be closely monitored for symptoms.

Staff testing continues for staff members who had direct contact with anyone who tested positive for COVID-19. Movement between acute and long-term care is restricted for staff who have or are currently working in acute care areas at SPH.

The Saanich Peninsula Hospital laboratory service outpatient collections have temporarily moved to our Keating Cross Road lab, located at 2140A Keating Cross Road. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other outpatient services, including medical imaging and day surgery, are open and it is safe to continue to access these services.

The hospital remains closed to acute admissions. The emergency department remains open and ready to provide safe care. If you require emergency care, please do not hesitate to visit the emergency room immediately.

Island Health has implemented comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in all acute and long-term care facilities. Dedicated COVID-19 units are established at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital to safely care for patients with COVID-19.
