Being pregnant, giving birth and caring for a newborn is an important time in a person’s life. You might feel excited and happy but also perhaps a little anxious. There are often questions and concerns along with the excitement and expectation. Right from the Start is here to support you as you navigate this meaningful time of your life.

Right from the Start offers support for pregnant people and new parents, their babies, children and families. Created by women, Right from the Start recognizes that you are the expert of your life. This program offers services that will contribute positively to your pregnancy and new parent experience. 

Program services are offered by experienced and caring public health nurses who will work in partnership with you. Our nurses are available by phone or in-person at Island Health Public Health Units across the region. Once registered, our team is here to listen and understand what is important for you, right from the start. We look forward to meeting you!

Services Include:

Prenatal Services: Identify topics important to you during your pregnancy such as nutrition, lifestyle factors, community support and your hopes for your pregnancy and birth. You may want information about getting ready for your baby’s arrival including what to expect when feeding and caring for your new baby.

Postpartum Support: Being at home with a new baby can be an emotional time, we offer physical and emotional support to new parents and their babies, including infant feeding, and you and your baby’s well-being and care.

Breastfeeding Support: Call or come by for clinic-based baby feeding assessments and breastfeeding support.

Family and Community Health:  We can talk to you about locating the services in your community that could be helpful during your pregnancy. From transportation and housing to nutritional support, we can provide referrals to health and community resources as needed.

Child Health Clinics and Immunization: Starting at two months of age.
