- Family Caregiver permits are available at no charge - one permit per family and it may be shared. These permits are only for resident families of residential (long term) care facilities.
- Financial Hardship permits may be available on a case by case basis - talk to your Unit Social Worker for more information.
Access to subsidized residential care is coordinated by Island Health staff.

Built in 1974, one floor facility. Extended Care Unit 1 is 2161.53 sq. m.; Extended Care Unit 2 is 2213.46 sq. m.
SPH is on one level, windows in all the rooms look out onto the outer fields or inner court yards. There are two visiting rooms. Two large dining rooms/activation rooms. There are two communal large screen televisions on in the Dining room and one in the Sunroom/Visiting room. There are three courtyards. The facility also has a beauty salon/barbershop. There is a gift shop/tuck shop.
Saanich Peninsula Hospital Extended Care is in a rural setting School District 61. The hospital is surrounded by rural agricultural land.
Philosophy of Care
We believe the care given to each resident will respect the person and their individual choices, needs and rights. There shall be a commitment to provide safe care consistent with current practices and techniques. We shall strive for a home like environment. We believe that family members make an important contribution to the residents’ care. The resident’s participation is encouraged in activities that support them in maintaining socialization, life skills and community ties. We recognize the personal history the resident brings. We value and nurture the memories that shape the unique individual.
Type of Accommodation
SPH is divided into two units, Unit 1 and Unit 2. Both units are connected by the dining rooms. Unit 1 has 72 beds and unit 2 has 71 beds. There are 17 private rooms, 10 semi private rooms and 116 ward beds.
Residents pay up to 80% of their after tax income which covers the cost of food and accommodation.
Special Recreational Opportunities
The Activation Department offers a variety of recreational activities and events including bus outings. The facility provides a bus equipped for wheelchairs for organized scenic drives and outings to community events and restaurants. Daily schedules of activities are listed on the activity board on each unit. A monthly calendar of events is published and is available to residents and family members. Walking programs and exercise programs are also offered to residents who are able to participate. We have a Physio Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Recreational Therapist on staff.
Saanich Peninsula Hospital is a Complex Care facility and basic wheelchairs and mobility aides are provided.
Motorized Scooter Policy
No motorized scooters allowed on the units.
As per Island Health policy. Accredited therapeutic pets only (PATS). Infection control policy is in effect.
As a health care provider, Island Health has an obligation to promote good health practices. We are committed to ensuring a safe, healthy and clean environment for everyone.
Smoking and vaping is not permitted on any Island Health property. This includes all buildings, grounds and parking lots.
Smoking outside in one designated spot, only for residents.
24 hour security from contracted Island Health Services “Securicare”. Central Saanich Police are in close proximity and can be reached by 9-1-1.
