Eunice Joe

Eunice joined Island Health on secondment from the First Nations Health Authority in May 2021 as Executive Director, Indigenous Health and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

Previous to that she was  the Director of Regional Engagement for the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), Vancouver Island Region.  Eunice has been with FNHA since 2009 supporting our health governance and community engagement work.

Eunice has a passion for working with First Nations people and working across cultures.  She approaches her work from a place of respect that is grounded in traditional teachings of “Hishook ish Tsawalk” (everything is one and all is connected).  Eunice likens this opportunity to the Nuu-Chah-Nulth practice of oosumch (roughly translated to vision quest). Traditionally, one leaves home/community/family to gain knowledge, strength and skills to bring back home.  In a modern context, it can be likened to her experiences of leaving home to pursue post-secondary education.

In a professional context, she views this as a time away from the FNHA family and community to engage with a new environment to gain new knowledge, skills and capacity, as much as it is to bring her experience with her to support Island Health in quality care and safety efforts.

As the acting Vice President, Eunice will provide a critical role in supporting Island Health to build a sustainable team in support of service delivery changes that improve the wellness, health and care needs of Indigenous peoples on Vancouver Island. Through her work, her goal is to serve Indigenous peoples, and strive to build a better future for children and families."
