Chief Professional Practice & Chief Nursing Officer

As a member of the Senior Executive and as Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Professional Practice, Dawn provides strategic leadership for nursing, allied health, and health team members to enable the delivery of the highest quality health and patient-focused care to the people we serve throughout Island Health. Her diverse portfolio includes Professional Practice, Learning & Performance Support, and Clinical Informatics. Dawn is also the Executive Lead for the Centre for Interprofessional Clinical Simulation and Learning (CICSL) in partnership with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program and the University of Victoria’s School of Nursing. In addition, Dawn is the Co-Chair of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Council, a provincial body reporting to the Nursing Policy Secretariat at the Ministry of Health.

Dawn is a proud RN and has worked as a health care leader for over 30 years. From her early days as a new graduate nurse running an ICU in rural Saskatchewan to Director, Community Hospitals here on Vancouver Island, Dawn’s progressive leadership has taken her across the full spectrum of the health care system. Her relational approach to leadership and her ability to lead transformation has been recognized with numerous awards including the BC Achievement Community Award and the BC Health Care Golden Apple Health Care Hero Award.

Dawn holds a Masters degree in Leadership (Health Specialization) from Royal Roads University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Victoria. Dawn is also an Adjunct Professor with the University of Victoria’s School of Nursing. As a lifelong learner, Dawn is currently completing the Caritas Coach Education Program (CCEP) with the Watson Caring Science Institute as she continues to seek new ways to enact deep system transformation.
